One Injured in Berry Bay Snowmobile Accident

Freedom — March 3, 2009 — A Massachusetts man, identified as Christopher Haynes, 36, of Byfield, Mass., was thrown from his snowmobile and injured Sunday afternoon on the channel between Berry Bay and Leavitt Bay. Haynes, who was unconscious when he was found, was transported by ambulance to Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro and later transferred by helicopter to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover.

Officials said Haynes, who was staying with friends on West Bay Road in Freedom, was traveling alone on the lake. When he failed to return to the house, his friends began searching the area and found him unconscious near his snowmobile at approximately 3 p.m.

A spokesperson for N.H. Fish & Game said Haynes hit an embankment or a ridge of ice or other stationary object and was thrown forward with force. Freedom and Madison police responded to the call, as did Freedom Fire and Rescue personnel.
