Ice-out was Saturday, April 21, at 9 p.m., according to Bob Smart, who enlisted seven observers from around the lake this year to help pinpoint the date. It's the fourth latest ice-out date since records have been kept for our lake. While Danforth Pond and other bodies of water in the area remain ice-covered, spring and warm temperatures are well on the way.
After an autumn flood, December was snowy, windy and bitterly cold, with power outages and frost heaves galore. It's the height of winter on the lake.
State officials brief Berry Bay Lake Association members about plans for a new dam on the north side of the Ossipee River complex. Construction should start early next summer.
Kudos to Dan Mattaini and John Picard. You may not know their names, but they're the ones who kept the lake level on an even keel all summer this year. Dan also reports that the state has found money for work needed on the spillway of the north side of the dam, which should start next summer.
The start of Summer Level Management arrived late on Wednesday, 5/24/17, with the installation of all stanchions and the first layer of stop logs on the north side. The lake level is now reported at 406.38'. Should be no problem reaching the scheduled summer level of 407.25' by June 1st.
